Traditional Vs Modern: the Big Piano Debate

January 23rd, 2012

Last week I got into an interesting discussion with my piano teacher. We were discussing the merits and demerits of digital and acoustic pianos. Well, it was perhaps more than a “discussion.” More of a debate in fact.

My piano teacher is and always will be strongly in favour of traditional pianos. He calls them “real” pianos. He says that nothing can compare with the sound and feel of a good grand piano.

I, on the other hand, am a fan of digital pianos. They’re portable and they cost much less than an upright or grand piano. Plus, the best digital pianos sound and feel pretty much the same as an acoustic. At least, that’s what I think.

Needless to say, my piano teacher disagrees. He’s only ever played on acoustic pianos. In fact, before he started teaching more, he wasn’t even aware that there were pianos like the Yamaha P95, which replicate the sound and feel of traditional acoustic pianos. He’s promised that he will try playing a digital piano at least once. But somehow I don’t think he will ever change his ways.

Still, he’s a great teacher. And I suppose there’s nothing wrong with being a fan of tradition. As long as he helps me become a better pianist, I think we can agree to disagree!
